the elderly russian couple

gliding down the Coney Island

boardwalk on a pleasant

December morning. The crowds

away for the winter.

Separate here from that pace

the dawdler cannot escape.

he wonders if it is their years

or maybe their proximity to the sea

that grants distance evident

in unrushable steps.

Worried he’s lingered too long

in someone’s way

eyes down scurries onto the next train

departing Surf Ave Station.
